2-Hydroxybutanenitrile is a chemical intermediate in the synthesis of medicines. It is used as a reagent for the synthesis of organic compounds and as a source of hydroxy groups. 2-Hydroxybutanenitrile is synthesized by reacting an organic compound with an inorganic acid, such as hydrochloric acid, or with a c1-c4 haloalkyl, such as chloroform. This reaction can be catalyzed by dehydrogenase enzymes. 2-Hydroxybutanenitrile is often used as a reactant in biological samples to induce certain enzymes that are necessary for the process to work. The structural formula for 2-hydroxybutanenitrile is shown below:
CH3CH2OH + HOCH2Cl → CH3COCH2Cl + H2O
The vibrational mode at 3200 cm-1 has been assigned to the stretching vibration of the -NHCO group.
