Heteratisine is a diterpenoid alkaloid that has been found in two plant families: Euphorbiaceae and Leguminosae. It has been shown to have antinociceptive activity in mice. Heteratisine has been isolated from the leaves of plants, but can also be found in the roots, stems, bark, and fruits. The basic structure of heteratisine is linear with an acidic hydrogen at C-3. The skeleton was determined by NMR spectra analysis and the hydroxyl group was confirmed by preparative hplc. Structural analysis revealed that heteratisin has a double bond between carbons 3 and 4. This alkaloid contains a hydroxyl group at carbon 1 which is responsible for its acidic properties and a linear structure.
