M-Hydroxybenzylhydrazine dihydrochloride is a potent inhibitor of dopamine and serotonin (5-ht2) receptors. It has been shown to inhibit the binding of dopamine and serotonin in microdialysis probes implanted in the caudate putamen, increasing locomotor activity. M-Hydroxybenzylhydrazine dihydrochloride inhibits monoamine neurotransmitter release by competitive inhibition of receptor activity. This drug has also been shown to have a physiological effect on rats, causing increased heart rate, respiratory rate, and body temperature at sublethal doses. The optimum concentration for M-Hydroxybenzylhydrazine dihydrochloride is 0.1 mM with a kinetic half life of 18 minutes. It is an enzyme inhibitor that binds to acetylcholinesterase, which catalyzes the hydrolysis of acetylcholine at cholinergic synapses.
