Rifampicin is an antibiotic that is used to treat infections caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacteria that causes tuberculosis. Rifampicin prevents the bacteria from multiplying by inhibiting the production of proteins vital for cell division. It binds to bacterial 16S ribosomal RNA and inhibits protein synthesis, leading to cell death by inhibiting the production of proteins vital for cell division. Rifampicin has a bactericidal effect on Mycobacterium tuberculosis and other mycobacteria such as Mycobacterium avium complex or Mycobacterium kansasii.
