2-Hydroxy-4-iodobenzoic acid is a ligand that binds to the uncoupling protein (UCP). UCP is a membrane protein found in the inner mitochondrial membrane of cells, which causes an increase in proton leak across the inner mitochondrial membrane. This increased proton leak leads to an increased production of ATP, but does not use oxygen, as opposed to oxidative phosphorylation. 2-Hydroxy-4-iodobenzoic acid has been shown to uncouple isolated rat liver mitochondria and is a potentiometric probe for measuring pH changes in mitochondria. 2-Hydroxy-4-iodobenzoic acid also binds with salicylic acid, causing it to release electrons that are used in the electron transport chain.
