6-Hydroxymethyl-2-naphthol is a monohydric phenol that is used as a raw material in the manufacture of dyes and pigments. 6-Hydroxymethyl-2-naphthol can be manufactured by the reaction of ethylene glycol with benzaldehyde and boric acid. This reaction produces the desired product, 6-hydroxymethyl-2-naphthol, and ethylene glycol monoethyl ether. The resulting product can be purified by dissolving it in water, filtering it through sodium sulfate, and evaporating the solution to remove residual solvents.
6-Hydroxymethyl-2-naphthol is used to make dyes and pigments, which are then used in cosmetics and other industrial applications. As a result, 6-(hydroxymethyl)-2-naphthol is often referred to as "dye extract".
