It is used as an antimicrobial treatment in water and industrial effluents and can also be used to control viscosity. The synthesis of 1-hydroxyethanediphosphonic acid potassiumsalt involves the reaction of sodium citrate with imine, followed by a hydrolysis step using hydrochloric acid. 1-Hydroxyethanediphosphonic acid potassiumsalt has been shown to inhibit matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) enzymes, which are involved in the breakdown of extracellular matrix proteins. 1-Hydroxyethanediphosphonic acid potassiumsalt is often used together with other functional groups such as amines or phosphoric acid esters because they have been shown to increase its antimicrobial activity.
