Description

2-Hydroxy-6-methoxypyridine is a lactam that has both five-membered and six-membered cyclic forms. It can exist in two tautomeric forms, the 2-hydroxymethylpyridine and the 6-hydroxymethylpyridine. The equilibrium between these two forms is determined by the kinetic and thermodynamic parameters of the system. The tautomeric equilibrium can be shifted to one form by adding a solvent that stabilizes one of the tautomers over another. For example, adding water will shift the equilibrium to favor the 2-hydroxymethylpyridine form.
