4(5)-Hydroxymethylimidazole is an organic compound that has been shown to interact with copper ions. The compound is a hydrogen bond acceptor and the copper complex forms a protonated species. 4(5)-Hydroxymethylimidazole has been shown to have depressant activity in animal studies, which may be caused by its ability to bind to sodium hydroxide solution and hydrochloric acid. 4(5)-Hydroxymethylimidazole is also able to interact with metal surfaces, such as copper or iron, with thermodynamic properties that are dependent on the concentration of the reactants. It is also taken up by plants and bacteria through active transport.
