DL-homocysteine thiolactone is an organic acid that belongs to the group of inorganic acids. It has been used in studies for the treatment of proliferative diabetic retinopathy and has shown to have a protective effect on the surface glycoprotein in retinal cells. DL-homocysteine thiolactone also inhibits protein synthesis and can be used as a growth factor by stimulating the production of reactive oxygen species, which may be useful for treating cardiac disease. The chemical reaction between DL-homocysteine thiolactone and hydrochloric acid produces hydrogen sulphide gas, which is toxic to cells. This compound has been investigated as an experimental model for studying cardiac failure.
