N-(Hydroxymethyl)salicylamide is a phenoxy fatty acid that is produced by the hydrolysis of salicylic acid. It is used in health care as an antiseptic and analgesic, and can be used as a preservative in pharmaceuticals. N-(Hydroxymethyl)salicylamide has been shown to inhibit the production of aromatic aldehydes such as benzene and unsaturated fatty acids such as thionyl chloride. This chemical also has the ability to decolorize water, which may be due to its ability to break down chlorine compounds.
