Description:

5-(1-Hydroxyethylidene)-2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxane-4,6-dione is a yellow liquid that is used as an intermediate in the synthesis of various pharmaceuticals. It can be synthesized by the decarboxylation of 2,5-hexanedione with zinc chloride. This compound can also be synthesized by condensation of 1,3-propanediol and ethyl vinyl ketone. The elimination reaction with 1,2 butanedioldimethanol yields 5-(1-hydroxyethylidene)-2,2-dimethylcyclohexane carboxylic acid. It is also possible to synthesize 5-(1-hydroxyethylidene)-2,2-dimethylcyclohexane carboxylic acid by the Diels-Alder reaction between cyclopentadiene and maleic anhydride.
