Description

Hexyl 2-hydroxybenzoate is a fatty acid that is used in the production of microcapsules that are capable of changing their phase transition temperature when exposed to light. The hydroxyl group on the hexyl chain makes it soluble in water and the presence of two hydroxyl groups allows for hydrogen bonding with metal hydroxides. Hexyl 2-hydroxybenzoate has been shown to emit light at wavelengths greater than 450 nm, which can be observed using UV-VIS spectroscopy. Hexyl 2-hydroxybenzoate can be used as an analytical method for determining the concentration of salicylates, glycol ethers, and benzoates. It can also be used as a detergent additive and as a model system for studying the interactions between lipophilic molecules and surfaces.
