The degradation of benzyl alcohol by 1-(2-hydroxy-3-methoxy)phenylethanone (1HMPE) has been studied in the presence of peroxidase. The reaction is initiated by hydrogen peroxide, which is generated from the oxidation of phenol by the peroxidase. The oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzoic acid proceeds through a series of steps, including an alkylation reaction and an oxidative degradative process. This biotransformation has been shown to be an effective way to degrade benzyl alcohols, which are environmental pollutants found in industrial effluents.
