Description

3-Hydroxyhexanoic acid is a fatty acid that is produced as a byproduct of the Krebs cycle. It is excreted in the urine of diabetic patients, and has been detected in the urine of healthy subjects, who form it from 3-hydroxybutyrate. 3-Hydroxyhexanoic acid has been shown to be toxic to bacteria such as Klebsiella aerogenes, which are an important cause of nosocomial infections. In tissue culture experiments with this bacterium, 3-hydroxyhexanoic acid inhibited growth and hemolytic activity. This compound also inhibits enzyme activities and histological analysis showed that it can induce morphological changes in cells. Kinetic data have also been obtained for this chemical. The chemical is fat soluble and can be extracted using organic solvents like chloroform or ether.
