Hexamethylacetone is a colorless liquid that has an odor similar to acetone. It is mainly used as an industrial solvent and in the production of polyesters. Hexamethylacetone can be synthesized by the reaction of formaldehyde with acetone, or by the addition of methanol to acetaldehyde. The chemical reactions involve nucleophilic attack and a subsequent elimination reaction. The kinetic data obtained from these experiments show that hexamethylacetone reacts with chloride to produce hydrogen chloride and methylene chloride. The intermolecular hydrogen bond between the carbonyl group and one proton on one molecule of hexamethylacetone results in a kinetic isotope effect.
