The hydroxyl group of 6-hydroxyquinoline is able to form hydrogen bonds with other molecules. This property is used in kinetic studies and in the determination of molecular structures by X-ray crystallography. The protonation of the hydroxyl group has been shown to be dependent on pH, which may be due to proton transfer reactions. 6-Hydroxyquinoline also forms acid complexes with metal ions such as iron(III) and copper(II), which is a photophysical reaction that produces acidic products. Hydrated, or water bound, 6-hydroxyquinoline molecules absorb light in the ultraviolet region at wavelengths below 300 nm.
