2-Hydroxy-2-methylpropionaldehyde (2HMPA) is an organic compound that has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria. This effect has been shown to be due to its ability to react with metal hydroxides in the cell wall, causing a change in the permeability of the cell wall and leading to a loss of cell viability. 2HMPA also reacts with glycolaldehyde, forming methyl ethyl glyoxal, which causes a decrease in pH and leads to bacterial death. The inhibition of bacterial growth by 2HMPA has also been shown using solid phase microextraction on methylene chloride/ethanol solutions containing glyoxal and methyl ethyl glyoxal as well as FTIR spectroscopy on carbonyl groups. The mechanism for this inhibition may be through competitive inhibition of the enzyme pyruvate: ferredoxin oxidoreductase, which is involved in the metabolism of sugars.
