2-Hydroxy-5-iodopyridine (2HIP) is a heterocyclic compound that has an electron deficient carbon atom. It is oxidized with halides to form 2-halo-5-iodopyridines and reacts with acetyl groups to form 2-(acetyloxy)-5-iodopyridines. 2HIP can be used as a catalyst for the iodination of indoles, which allows for the synthesis of other heteroaryl compounds. This compound is also an important reagent in the synthesis of coumarins, which are aromatic organic compounds found in plants.
