1-Hydroxy-2,5-dioxopyrrolidine-3-sulfonic acid is a fatty acid that has been shown to be reactive with the lining of the intestine and to cause inflammation in inflammatory bowel disease. It also has been shown to activate monocytes and stimulate the release of cytokines from human serum. 1-Hydroxy-2,5-dioxopyrrolidine-3-sulfonic acid has been used in vitro for cancer gene therapy as an alternative to cisplatin. This compound can be converted into an acid complex by reaction with an appropriate metal ion or base. The optimum concentration is determined by measuring the disulfide bond formation between cysteine residues on two proteins.
