2-Hydroxy-7-methoxy-2H-1,4-benzoxazin-3(4H)-one (2HMBO) is a plant cell molecule that has been shown to confer high levels of resistance in plants against herbicides. It can be found in resistant cultivars of many different species and has been detected in animals, exudates, and samples from plants. 2HMBO has been shown to inhibit the activity of the enzyme p-hydroxybenzoic acid hydroxylase (PHAH). This enzyme converts p-hydroxybenzoic acid into benzoic acid, which is an intermediate metabolite that often accumulates when plants are exposed to herbicides. 2HMBO also inhibits the activity of enzymes that synthesize proteins within the cell. This inhibition causes a decrease in protein synthesis and leads to cell death due to lack of essential proteins for growth and division. The chemical structure of 2HMBO is shown below
