3-Hydroxybutyronitrile is an organic compound that belongs to the methyl ethyl group. It can be synthesized by reacting sodium citrate with hydroxyacetic acid, carbon dioxide, and a hydrolysing agent such as sulfuric acid. 3-Hydroxybutyronitrile has been shown to have a blood pressure lowering effect in animals and humans. This compound also has a number of other physiological effects, including inhibition of the synthesis of cholesterol and triglycerides, stimulation of the breakdown of fats and proteins, and inhibition of the production of ketone bodies. 3-Hydroxybutyronitrile can also be used as an active substance for pharmaceuticals or cosmetics. 3-Hydroxybutyronitrile is an inorganic acid that undergoes vibrational relaxation via stretching vibrations at 230 nm. The reaction is catalyzed by enzymes in living organisms such as bacteria, fungi, and plants.
