(2R)-2-Hydroxy-2-methylbutanoic acid is a carboxylic acid that can be used in solvents, immobilization, and molecular imprinting. It is synthesized by coupling the hydroxy group of 2-hydroxybutanoic acid with a methyl group. (2R)-2-Hydroxy-2-methylbutanoic acid has been shown to bind to the carboxylic acid group of acrylic acid and form an ester. The resulting (2R)-2-hydroxy-3-(3'-carboxyphenyl)propanoic acid has been shown to exhibit optical activity when dissolved in solvents, which may be due to its conformational nature. This compound also has been shown to have immobilizing properties for use as a crosslinker for polymers such as polyurethane, polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene, and polyethylene glycol.
