It has been used in the production of polyunsaturated fatty acids and as a diagnostic for temperatures. Cis-10-Heptadecenoic acid methyl ester has also been shown to be synthesized by the growth temperature of cells. This fatty acid can be extracted from microalgae and then used to produce margarine. The cis-10-heptadecenoic acid methyl ester calibration standard is based on linolenic acid, which is another type of fatty acid found in microalgae.
