Hypotaurine is a reactive substance that is found in the body at physiological levels. It can be synthesized by reacting taurine with sodium citrate, or by reducing hypotaurine with sodium borohydride. Hypotaurine has been shown to inhibit mitochondrial membrane potential and sperm motility in vitro assays. The mechanism of action of this substance is not yet known, but it may occur due to effects on enzymes involved in energy metabolism such as taurine dioxygenase or mitochondrial glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase. Hypotaurine also inhibits the activity of target enzymes such as carnitine acyltransferase and phosphoglycerate kinase 2, leading to decreased cellular respiration and ATP production. This may lead to the observed effects on mitochondrial membrane potential, sperm motility, and energy metabolism.
