Description:

2,4-Heptadien-6-one is an organic compound that is a hydrogenated dienone. It has been used as a hydration and diacetate in the synthesis of polyesters and polyamides. 2,4-Heptadien-6-one can be synthesized by the reaction of acetaldehyde with chloride in the presence of a catalyst such as PdCl2 or PtCl3. The hydrogenation of 2,4-heptadien-6-one to form 2,4,6-octatrienoic acid provides an alternate route for the synthesis of fatty acids. The hydration product can be converted to a lactaldehyde using hydrochloric acid and heat. This reaction also forms chlorohydrin from chloroform. Chlorohydrin reacts with alcohols to form esters or ethers, depending on the alcohol's structure.
