Hydroxymethyl acetate is a low-energy chemical reaction product. It is a biocompatible polymer with substrate binding properties and is used in the synthesis of polyhydroxymethylene, which is a precursor to polyamides. Hydroxymethyl acetate has been shown to be effective in the treatment of cancer and has been shown to inhibit the growth of certain bacteria by binding to their fatty acid chains. Hydroxymethyl acetate also reacts with aromatic hydrocarbons
to form alkoxy radicals, which can be used as an acid catalyst.
