Hexaammineruthenium(II) chloride (HREM) is an organometallic compound that is used as a precursor in the synthesis of ruthenium-based catalysts. HREM has been shown to be an efficient electrocatalyst for the oxidation of dopamine, which may be due to its ability to generate carbonyl groups on the surface of gold electrodes. When combined with human serum, HREM can produce acid formation. This acid formation can be monitored using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and immobilized HREM was observed to have a high turnover rate for acetylcholine esterase.
