[[Hydroxy-(phosphonoamino)phosphoryl]amino]phosphonic acid (HPAPA) is a synthetic antimicrobial agent that has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria. HPAPA is synthesized by the reaction of two molecules of [[hydroxy-(phosphonoamino) phosphonyl] aminophosphonic acid (HPPA) with an additional molecule of [[hydroxide] ion]. HPAPA inhibits bacterial growth by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, preventing transcription and replication. It also binds to the enzyme ATP synthase, inhibiting its activity. The potent inhibition of bacterial growth by HPAPA can be seen through its high resistance to sodium hydroxide solution, which is used as a general test for antimicrobials.
