8-Hydroxyquinoline-5-sulfonic acid monohydrate (8HQMS) is a phenolic compound that has been used in the past as an artificial food colorant. It is a diammonium salt of 8-hydroxyquinoline, which is activated through the addition of hydrogen peroxide and potassium persulfate. This leads to the formation of an extremely reactive species that can oxidize bilirubin at a much lower activation energy than the natural enzyme bilirubin oxidase. The product’s high reactivity also allows for its use as an immobilized sensor for amines and phenols. 8HQMS is also able to generate luminescent light when it reacts with anthracene, which can be used to detect phenothiazine or 4-hydroxycoumarin.
