2-Heptyl-1-hydroxyquinolin-4-one (2HHQ) is an antibacterial agent that inhibits bacterial growth by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit of bacteria. It has been shown that 2HHQ has a broad spectrum of activity against Gram negative and Gram positive bacteria, including aeruginosa, which is resistant to most other antibiotics. 2HHQ binds to the 30S ribosomal subunit and inhibits protein synthesis by preventing the formation of peptidyl transfer reactions. This drug also prevents electron transport from cytochrome c oxidase to oxygen, inhibiting aerobic respiration. 2HHQ can be used as a chemical biology tool for studying bacterial translation and protein synthesis.
