5-Hydroxysulfapyridine is a sulfonamide antibiotic and a competitive inhibitor of dihydropteroate synthase. It inhibits the growth of bacteria by binding to the enzyme, preventing the synthesis of folic acid. 5-Hydroxysulfapyridine can be used to treat infections caused by Escherichia coli and colitis caused by Clostridium difficile. The efficacy of 5-hydroxysulfapyridine has been demonstrated in vitro using several different analytical methods, including an assay for acetylated pterin. In vivo studies have shown that 5-hydroxysulfapyridine is effective in treating animals with ovaries (rats) or animals without ovaries (mice).
