L-Homocysteic acid is an acidic amino acid with a pK a of 2.5. It is found in the human body and has been shown to have therapeutic effects on cancer, glutamate-induced neuronal damage, and leukemic mice. L-Homocysteic acid binds to the NMDA receptor, which is involved in synaptic transmission and plasticity. L-Homocysteic acid also inhibits glutamate pyruvate transaminase (GPT), a key enzyme that converts glutamate into alpha-ketoglutarate for energy production. L-Homocysteic acid can be used as a diagnostic tool for identifying cancer cells because it accumulates in these cells at high levels.
