Product Information

Name:
3,4-Hexanedione
Synonyms:
  • Bipropionyl
  • Hexane-3,4-dione
  • NSC 23255
Description:

3,4-Hexanedione is a reactive organic compound that has a basic structure and is used in the manufacture of polyester resins. It has been shown to react with DNA to form adducts, which interfere with metabolic functions and can lead to organ damage. 3,4-Hexanedione also inhibits the activity of enzymes through intramolecular hydrogen transfer reactions. The toxic effects of this chemical are well documented in model organisms such as the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster and the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. 3,4-Hexanedione has been shown to cause bronchiolitis obliterans in humans who work at factories where this chemical is used. This chemical may be carcinogenic and should not be handled without proper safety equipment.
