Amiloride is a drug that can be used to prevent the formation of stones in the urinary tract and intestines. It is thought to work by blocking sodium channels in the kidneys and intestines, thereby reducing the amount of sodium and water that are reabsorbed into the bloodstream. Amiloride has been shown to have antimicrobial effects against Gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Enterococcus faecalis. Amiloride also inhibits cell growth in solid tumours by inhibiting protein synthesis through binding with ion channels on the cell surface.
