2-Hydroxy-5-(methoxycarbonyl)benzoic acid (2HBMB) is a photoinduced, photodecomposition compound. Irradiation of 2HBMB with UV light induces the decomposition of the peroxide and hydroxylation to form the corresponding phenols and other products. The mechanisms of this reaction are not well understood but are thought to involve a series of steps that involve hydrogen peroxide. This reaction is also catalyzed by oxygen. 2HBMB is soluble in organic solvents such as acetonitrile, which can be used for preparative purposes.
