2-Hydroxymethyl-6-methylphenol (HMMP) is a quinone that has been synthesized from 2,4,6-trimethylphenol. The synthesis of HMMP is accomplished by reacting 2,4,6-trimethylphenol with formaldehyde in the presence of chloroform and sodium hydroxide. This reaction results in the formation of an alkyl chloride. The alkyl chloride is then reacted with cyclopentadiene to form a regiospecifically substituted 1,2-dihydroquinone.
2HMMP is soluble in organic solvents such as chloroform, benzene and acetone. It can also be dissolved in water when treated with strong acids or bases.
