4-Hydroxy-[1,1'-biphenyl]-3-carboxylic acid (4HBC) is a carboxy derivative of biphenyl that has been shown to inhibit the growth of colon cancer cells. 4HBC can be taken orally and is converted to its active form, 4-hydroxy-2,2'-biphenyl-3-carboxylic acid. It acts by binding to mitochondrial membranes and inhibiting the electron transport chain in which it inhibits the respiratory enzyme cytochrome c oxidase. This leads to the inhibition of ATP production and cell death. The oral dosage form of 4HBC is made up of small particles so it is absorbed quickly in the small intestine without being broken down by digestive enzymes in the stomach. The particle size also allows for more surface area exposure, increasing absorption.
