Description:

5-Hydroxyhexanoic acid is an organic compound that is a metabolite of fatty acids in humans. It is formed by the oxidation of 5-hydroxyhexanoate and is excreted in urine. 5-Hydroxyhexanoic acid can be detected in urine samples from diabetic patients who are deficient in the enzyme hexokinase. It has been shown to have clinical relevance for the diagnosis of diabetes mellitus, as well as for the assessment of fat metabolism disorders. The levels of 5-hydroxyhexanoic acid are elevated in patients with carnitine deficiency or a defect in fatty acid oxidation, such as those with medium chain acyl CoA dehydrogenase deficiency (MCADD).
