Hydroxystilbamidine bis(methanesulfonate) is a drug used to treat amoebiasis. It is an amebicidal agent that inhibits the growth of the parasite by acting on the kinetoplast, which is a structure in the cytoplasm of an amoeba. Hydroxystilbamidine bis(methanesulfonate) also prevents the synthesis of DNA in tissue culture cells and has been shown to inhibit toll-like receptor activity in human leukocytes. This drug can be used as a fluorescent probe for DNA and RNA, and has been shown to bind to hydroxyl groups in tissues. It also has a disulfide bond that can be activated with reducing agents such as sodium borohydride or dithiothreitol.
