The compound is lipophilic and accumulates in adipose tissue. 1,2,3,4,7,8,9-Heptachlorodibenzofuran has been shown to be carcinogenic in animals and humans when given at high doses. It has been found to increase the risk of cancer in women and abdominal cancer in both sexes. This chemical also has the ability to inhibit the activity of insulin receptors on cells.
