Heptachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin is an organochlorine compound that has been shown to cause various types of cancer, including liver and kidney cancer. The carcinogenic potential of heptachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin was first reported in the 1960s when a high incidence of liver lesions in rats was observed following administration of this substance. Heptachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin is metabolized by cytochrome P450 enzymes and can be activated to reactive intermediates, which bind covalently to DNA. These reactive intermediates are also mutagenic, leading to mutations in the DNA sequence. This mechanism may be responsible for the carcinogenic activity of heptachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin.
