Hexachlorodibenzofuran (HCDF) is a chlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin that has been shown to cause cancer in humans. HCDF is found in the environment as a result of its manufacture and use as an insecticide, and can be detected in human serum, adipose tissue, and liver. It has also been detected in the environment as a result of wastewater treatment plant effluent. The presence of HCDF in these environments is due to its high water solubility and persistence. Hexachlorodibenzofuran can be analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry or liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry with electron capture detection.
