Hexamidine dihydrochloride is a synergic antibiotic that is used in the treatment of infectious diseases. Hexamidine dihydrochloride inhibits the growth of human pathogens by binding to their cell walls and interferes with their metabolism. It also has amoebicidal activity, which means it can kill certain types of amoeba. Hexamidine dihydrochloride may react with benzalkonium chloride, nitrogen, glycol ethers and glycol esters. The chemical reaction between hexamidine dihydrochloride and these molecules results in the formation of a polymerase chain complex that prevents DNA synthesis. This process leads to bacterial cell death.
