(2S,3S,5S)-2-Hexyl-3,5-dihydroxyhexadecanoic acid is a metal salt of the tetrahydrolipstatin (THL) molecule. It is synthesized by reacting 2,3-dihydroxyhexadecane with a mixture of sodium borohydride and sodium hydroxide in methanol. This substance is a competitive inhibitor of dihydroceramide desaturase and has been used as an experimental drug to treat obesity.
