28-Homo castasterone is a potent, non-selective cation channel blocker that binds to the cytosolic Ca2+ channel. This inhibitor blocks the influx of Ca2+ ions from the extracellular space into cells and has a high resistance to degradation by intracellular esterases. 28-Homo castasterone is used in experimental studies for its cytotoxic effects on cancer cells and its ability to inhibit enzyme activities. The mechanism of action is not known, but it appears to be related to hydrogen bonding interactions. 28-Homo castasterone is found in natural compounds such as gatifloxacin and castasterone.
