Product Information

Name:
Homotaurine N,N-diacetic acid
Synonyms:
  • N-(Carboxymethyl)-N-(3-sulfopropyl)-glycine
  • N,N-diacetylhomotaurine
  • 2,2'-[(3-Sulfopropyl)Imino]Diacetic Acid
Description:

Homotaurine is a naturally occurring amino acid found in the brain. It has been shown to reduce drug self-administration in animals, and to be effective in suppressing cocaine-induced dopamine release in monkeys. Homotaurine has been shown to inhibit the activity of transpeptidases, enzymes that cleave peptide bonds on proteins within cells, by binding to their active site. This inhibition leads to reduced synthesis of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), an inhibitory neurotransmitter that plays a role in regulating neuronal excitability. The mechanisms underlying the effects of homotaurine are not yet known but may involve detoxification of drugs or other substances such as alcohol.
