Hydralazine is a vasodilator that belongs to the class of drugs known as hydrazines. It is used in clinical medicine to treat high blood pressure and congestive heart failure. Hydralazine is converted in vivo to its active form, hydroxyhydralazine, which then binds to the vascular smooth muscle and increases their permeability to water and sodium ions. This leads to relaxation of the smooth muscle, which results in decreased peripheral resistance, increased cardiac output, and reduced venous return. The terminal half-life of hydralazine can range from 3 hours to 10 hours depending on individual variability. Hydralazine is a non-selective drug that interacts with both alpha-adrenergic receptors (vasoconstriction) and beta-adrenergic receptors (vasodilation). It has been shown that the phenotypic difference between humans and rabbits may be due to differences in atropine sulfate metabolism.
