Hydrogen methyl malonate potassium salt (HMMK) is a synthetic compound that has been shown to be effective in the treatment of inflammatory diseases such as hepatitis. It is a prodrug that is hydrolyzed in vivo to methylmalonic acid, its active form. HMMK may be used for the treatment of chronic hepatitis and other inflammatory diseases such as Crohn's disease. The chemical reactions of HMMK are not well-understood but it is thought that it inhibits cell growth by interfering with fatty acid oxidation and production of reactive oxygen species.
