Bexarotene is a synthetic vitamin A analogue that has been used in the treatment of malignant skin tumors. It is converted to retinoic acid, which can bind to nuclear receptors and activate gene transcription. Bexarotene also has minimal activity against the growth of cancer cells in vitro. However, it does not show any clinical efficacy in patients with advanced malignancies. It may be effective in treating non-malignant diseases such as psoriasis and erythropoietic protoporphyria, but is not active against other types of cancers or against normal tissues. The drug has shown pharmacological profiles that are similar to those of retinoic acid, although it lacks some of the toxic effects associated with this drug.
